Monday Movie Review - THE INHERITANCE

I never saw the trailer. It was the cover and blurb that sold me. And two things struck me immediately about this little feature. First, the "inheritance" deals with a generations-old pact these people's ancestors made as slaves. The young people who gather at a family estate are there thinking they're going to inherit money, when the truth is they've been selected to be sacrificed. There's also ancient African tribal voodoo, and resurrected condemned slaves. That idea alone gave this "six people alone in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter" storyline fresh blood (no pun intended.)

Second, the acting by these relatively unknown actors is top-notch, and the film has a slick, professional feel to it.

Blood and gore is minimized. There are beheadings and dismemberments, but it's all done off-screen. The film is considered more of a thriller than horror. (BTW, the jacket cover is very misleading.)

The cons? I just couldn't get into the movie. Too few exciting moments between long stretches of proselytizing.

I debated whether or not to recommend this movie, but the different slant was enough to tilt the scales. Therefore I suggest with some hesitation that you

Monday Movie Review - SEASON OF THE WITCH

I initially rented this movie not because I'm a Nic Cage fan, but because I'm also a Ron Perlman fan from way back in the days of "Beauty and the Beast". So it wasn't surprising how much I enjoyed this historical piece. It's basically a "buddy" movie, with both Nic and Ron getting equal opportunity to chew the scenery. But there's also a neat story.

In the time of the Crusades, two knights are selected to transport a supposed witch to a special monastery. The monks believe witchcraft is the cause behind the Black Plague, and they hope to coerce the witch into cancelling the spell or whatever it is that has brought about the infection.

The blood is sparse, but the gruesomeness of the disease is very prevalent (along with some fantastic makeup FX.) Cage and Perlman make very convincing knights who may be past their prime age-wise, but who still maintain a commanding presence, as well as superb expertise with the sword. 

The ending was my only gripe. It was a bit "meh" for me, but otherwise I can't quibble.
