Adding Monsters to Everyday Scenes Makes Life More Interesting

Adelaide-based artist and photographer Jasper St Aubyn West turns ordinary into extraordinary by sketching monsters into everyday scenes.

The inspiration for the series came to West while he was on a trip to Las Vegas. “I checked out the strip on the first day I was there and found I didn’t have the urge to take many photos,” he told Mashable.

“Everyone had a camera! I realized there must be countless thousands of photos out there taken from exactly the same angle of exactly the same thing,” he added. “It got me thinking about trying to find a slightly more unique way to document my journeys.”

And so once West got home, he started doodling monsters into his pictures, instantly making his photos stand out. Some of his works depict a giant worm swallowing a subway train, a dog for an airplane, and a grumpy banana.

Monday Movie Review - ATTACK THE BLOCK

Time and time again the independent filmmaker outshines and out-creates anything Hollywood can do. And that's especially true of "Attack the Block". In fact, I promise you're going to end up rooting for the bad guys in this film.

The bad guys are inner city kids. Punks. In the UK. (Yeah, the Brits have their gangs, too.) At the beginning of the film they attack a young woman, who manages to get away sans her purse. While the boys are rejoicing at their haul, they witness a flaming something fall from the sky and land nearby. They go to investigate, and that's where the horror begins. As more of the alien creatures arrive, the gang holes up in an apartment building and try to survive the attack.

The gore and kills are plentiful. The CGI is sparse. And the creatures are incredible, fresh, and unique. My only qualm is that it took a while for my ears to adjust to understanding the accents, but that was a minor detail.

Overall, my enthusiastic recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - MONSTERS

At first I had high hopes for this movie, especially in the wake of Cloverfield, and with the soon-to-be-released Skyline.  But the film didn't turn out exactly the way I thought it would.

A photographer down in Mexico is trying to get up-close shots of the Monsters that landed 6 years ago.  While there, he is called by his boss and told that boss's daughter was on vacation in Mexico, and got caught up in one of the attacks.  "Go find her and bring her back to the US."

The photographer finds her and tries to bring her back, but that means crossing the Infected Zone, which is a section of land hundreds of miles wide and long, and lying directly between the border of the US and the interior of Mexico.

What entails is their journey as they traverse through the dangerous territory to reach the US, encountering rogue militia, the ghastly remains of people and towns, and of course the Monsters, which resemble walking octopi to me (no spoiler here, folks.  You can see it in the trailers.)

This is not a horror movie filled with gore.  It hits above the collar, messing with your mind.  It fills you with "What if it was me?".   It makes you think.  It makes you cringe.

My first inclination was "meh", but the more I think on it, the more I realize I want to go back and view it again.  And again.
