The Blood Eagle

The blood eagle is a torture method detailed in Norse poetry. It begins with the skin on your back being sliced open, exposing your rib cage. Your ribs are then snapped back, making it look like you have wings. The lungs are then be dragged out and left hanging until you die. (Credit: Morbid Knowledge)

And on this farm he had some pigs, E I E I O
With a hack hack here,
and a chop chop there,
Here a shriek, there a scream
Everywhere the blood streams...
Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O

In rural Georgia in 1948, a man was lucky to get any kind of work.  Which was why Cletus Pink felt he'd been blessed when an old farmer named MacDonald offered him a job.  But what was making the horrific sounds coming from the main house? Worse, why was there always fresh blood oozing out from underneath the kitchen's back door?

Monday Movie Review - SHADOW

I <3 stories that have you so totally immersed in what's going on that, when you get to the ending, you never saw it coming.

SHADOW begins with an American war vet newly released from his stint in the Iraqui war. His passion is off-road biking (not motor), and on a friend's recommendation, takes off to trails unknown in Europe. There he meets another biker, a beautiful female, and things take a romantic turn until some burly locals decide to have a little fun with them. What none of them expect is for a stranger to come from out of nowhere and kidnap them all, take them to an isolated farmhouse, and begin to experiment on them.

Yes, this is a torture flick, but that's not the horrific part of this movie. And to tell you any more will spoil it for you.

That's why I whole-heartedly suggest that you

Monday Movie Review - GROTESQUE

From France I went to Japan, and a movie I've read a lot about but just now got around to watching. GROTESQUE is a torture film, pure and unadulterated.  The movie is so graphic, it's banned in Britain.

It's the story of a young man and woman going out on their very first date.  Except they're interrupted on their way back from the restaurant by a maniac (with surgical skills) who kidnaps them and keeps them locked up some place that's unspecific.

Before he starts torturing them, he explains that if they manage to "excite" him, he will let them go free.  Please note that the torture itself is a conglomerate of sexual and physical violence, including dismemberment, etc.  This movie is not for the squeamish.  The gore is believable, and the very cold attitude from the "doctor" will send chills down your spine.

Again, this movie managed to surprise me in both the way the plot develops and how it ends.  Which is why my recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE

First off, let me be frank about this movie.  It's brutal, but it's realistic.  After watching it, I watched the special features, and I was very impressed by the bluntness of the actors and how they felt about the subject matter, and how they handled it.  I was more impressed by the fact that there was a "safety word", in the event the acting became too difficult to accept.

This is not a remake, per se, of the original movie.  The plot is similar, yes, but the ways the woman gets her revenge are fresh and extremely horrific.  This movie will make you squirm, as well as cheer.

Synopsis:  A woman rents a cabin in the backwoods in order to do some writing (she's an author.)  A group of men who run the only gas station for miles around end up challenging each other, declaring the woman to be a city whore who deserves everything they'll dish out to her (although the woman has not absolutely nothing to rate this.)

They end up raping her repeatedly, until she escapes and tries to drown herself in a nearby river.  What follows is her revenge on these men, with each of them getting their individual punishments that fit their own particular crime.

A very thought-provoking film, I highly highly recommend that you:

Monday Movie Review - WITCHFINDER GENERAL

I was in the mood for a Vincent Price film and found this one on Netflix.  Because I hadn't seen it before, and because Price himself once said he believed this was one of his best performances, I watched it.

For a movie made in the '70s, it holds up extremely well.  Of course, the blood is a tad too red to look real, but the acting is top-notch, and the torture scenes still can wring a gasp out of you.

Price plays a Witchfinder in the 1600s who goes from village to village, promising the townspeople he can rid them of famine and whatnot by removing the witches who caused it...for a price, of course.  It's when he sets his sights on a priest's daughter, and she refuses him, that he punishes both the father and daughter by accusing them of being witches.  Yes, Price is the bad guy in this film, but isn't that what he does best?

I love Price's films, my favorite being THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES.  Like many of his movies, this is a period piece.  And although I'm not real big on "historical horror", I had a good time with this one.  Which is why my recommendation is that you:

Monday Movie Review - SLAUGHTER

Once again we have a "based on true events" film.  Good, bad, or indifferent, I was following this along pretty well until it got to the ending.  Or "ending", because this film really doesn't end.  There is no Happy Ever After.  There is no feeling of reaching a satisfactory conclusion whatsoever.  I guess that's why this movie continues to intrigue me.

In brief, Faith is trying to escape a brutal boyfriend by moving to a new city.  At a nightclub, she meets up with Lola, who appears to be in the grip of another heartless boyfriend, and helps her to get the creep off her back. They strike up a friendship, with Lola inviting Faith to her farm (said farm raises and slaughters pigs).

When Faith's boyfriend appears in town, Faith asks Lola if she can move in with her.  Lola agrees, and the two form a fast, almost sister-like friendship.  That is, until Faith finds out about Lola's past when it comes to her family and past boyfriends.  And that's when things start to get UGLY.

This is a movie filled abuse and torture.  It's graphic, but not over the top.  The acting is worthwhile, and I can understand how this film became one of the selections for the After Dark Horrorfest.

My recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - SEVEN DAYS

Sometimes torture horror hits home, and sometimes it misses.  This one hit home.

This Canadian French film (with subtitles) tells the story of a surgeon whose 8-year-old daughter is raped and murdered by a known pedophile.  The father makes arrangements to kidnap the criminal before he goes to trial, and give the man his own form of justice.  The title refers to the fact that the father informs the police that in seven days (which end on what would have been the daughter's 9th birthday) the murderer will be killed, and then he'll turn himself in.

This is not one the high-action, extremely bloody and violent films that you might see if it had come from the U.S.  This is a deep, intense study of human nature.  Of the power of love.  Of the strength of commitment.  Of vengeance.  Of the difficulty in dealing with an untimely, brutal death.

Yes, there is graphic content, and you will squirm at what the father does to the rapist.  But you will also find yourself cheering for the surgeon.  And you will commiserate with him.

Which makes my recommendation to be a wholehearted

Monday Movie Review - NINE DEAD

This movie has a great premise:  a masked killer kidnaps nine seemingly random victims and chains them in a room.  He gives them ten minutes to find out what they all have in common.  If they don't, he'll kill one of them.  At first they don't believe him, until he fulfills his promise and takes his first victim.

As the clock keeps ticking away, and the victims are slaughtered one at a time, the survivors try to find the answer the killer is seeking.

The cast is good.  The tension is there.  The kills aren't spectacularly bloody, but the who-done-it keeps you glued... until the ending.  The big, sucky ending that doesn't satisfy, and in my honest opinion, felt overly contrived.

My recommendation?
