A 33-year-old Polish man, who had his face torn off by stone-cutting machinery on April 23, 2013, underwent a total face transplant on May 15, 2013.
The 27-hour surgery, the first life-saving face transplant performed so soon after injury, was conducted by Polish doctors.
This was notable because previous face transplants had been done months or years after the injury.
