Years ago a controversial filmmaker made a movie entitled THE HILLS RUN RED. The movie was said to be so horrific, it drove the man insane. The film was burned, and the filmmaker disappeared. Thus begins this movie.
Next, move forward several years. A young man, a filmmaker in his own right, has been obsessed with the idea of finding the rumored last surviving copy of this movie. He and his friends head out into the backwater hills (a la The Wrong Turn) to track down members of the original cast and crew in a documentary style quest. He succeeds in finding the filmmaker's daughter, now living and working in a brothel.
And from there, the movie takes the audience on a roller coaster ride with misdirection, bloody scares, unexpected turns, and even bloodier deaths.
The scenery in this film-within-a-film is gorgeous. The acting is pretty damn good. The deaths are spectacular. And the little twists in the plot that I never saw coming were a nice touch. Add some extensive behind-the-scenes tracks as some of the bonus features, and you have a great little independent feature. Not to mention the birth of a new masked sadistic killer, Babyface.
My whole-hearted recommendation?
