This is one of the 8 films selected by Fangoria Magazine as part of their FrightFest. The FrightFest is basically Fangoria's answer to the HorrorFest. This is the first film I've seen of the 8, and for the first one out of the gate, so to speak, I have to admit I'm impressed.
The story revolves around a child and his mother who are involved in a wreck one winter night. It's several days before the car is discovered. Although the mother died on the scene, the boy managed to survive. (No spoilers here, but you get the picture.)
Cut to several years later. The boy is a man, and now he's captured five individuals and is holding them hostage inside an abandoned cistern. He gives them four barrels of water, a thirty-day clock, and a scalpel, along with a note that the average human cannot subsist for more than 30 days without food.
And thus the wait begins to see how the five will handle their situation. Why were they chosen? Who will die, and who will survive? Who is the maniac who kidnapped them in the first place, and why?
Although a lot of these questions are answered, too many are left unanswered. Still, the acting is superb. The gore is more psychological than flamboyant, and the pacing and directing is top-notch. I'm looking forward to checking out the other films. And my recommendation for this flick is that you
