Monday Movie Review - BLACK DEATH

I was lucky to see this on HDNet prior to it hitting theaters.  And I have to admit I was very impressed.

Back in the 14th century, when the Bubonic Plague hits Europe, people begin blaming witches as the cause.  At a monestary, some monks welcome a small group of soldiers who have arrived seeking help.  The leader, Ulric, informs the priests that they have heard of a village where there have been no outbreaks, and they want a monk to help provide guidance.  A young monk named Osmund, who was born near the area, offers to go with them.

Once they arrive at the village, at first it appears that the plague has bypassed them.  But then they realize that a more horrific evil has taken hold in the town.

The film's atmosphere is intense.  The plague and the terror it incites are brutally realistic.  Although the gore is not over the top, it still makes you cringe.  I have seen a few movies detailing the black plague, but in my opinion this is probably the best.

That's why my whole-hearted recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK

This film will remind you of "Last House on the Left".  A sadistic man named Alex rapes a woman at the beginning of the movie.  We then see Alex is running a repair shop, and he and his good buddy Ricky are preparing for a night on the town when a carload of upper class young people stop to have their vehicle serviced.  To thank Alex for his help, they invite him to their place for a little party.

Once there, Alex and Ricky start slicing, terrorizing, and raping their hosts.  But it's soon revealed that all is not exactly as it seems to be.

This is not a slasher horror movie with gore.  It's a psychological drama with a neat twist at the end.  Although the movie is from 1980 (and looks dated in all aspects), the story itself is enough to keep you engrossed to find out the truth behind the attacks.

Please note, however, that there are some sloooow parts, and I admit I fast-forwarded through some of them.  There is graphic sex and a lot of nudity, as well (hey, it's Ruggero Deodato directing!)  But overall my recommendation is that you

UpComing Movies I Won't Miss

Most of the time I shy away from the movie theaters because of the way the teens have taken over, calling each other on their cell phones, and generally being snotty to regular patrons.  (I wish our theater had a cell dampener like some do, but that's another blog post.)

Anyway I normally wait for the flick to come out on DVD so I can watch it in the comfort of my own home and big screen TV.  But sometimes a movie looks so good, I am willing to chance the theater.

These two below or on my "definitely theater" list.

Oh!  And if you get HDNet, don't miss the premiere of BLACK DEATH!  Movie times are:
Wed., Mar. 9 - 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT
Wed., Mar. 9 - 9:45 PM ET / 6:45 PM PT
