Monday Movie Review - HACK!

Oookay.  Here we go again.  Six twenty-somethings go to a privately owned island (which is not much different from being "out in the middle of nowhere" - you still get no cell phone service) in order to do some research for their college classes.  They meet up with the owners, who are amateur filmmakers (aka "strange couple living there").  What the kiddoes don't know is that the filmmakers love to "recreate" their favorite horror movies, but without the special effects.  In other words, if a limb is cut off, they gleefully chop off a student's arm.

In some ways this movie is different from the usual "chase and slaughter" plot devices.  It was interesting to see who survived and why.  There's also a strange little plot twist, but overall the film is slow to get going, and the jokes are lame.

Overall, if you want a nice no-brainer movie, and you have a couple of hours to waste,  I recommend:

Monday Movie Review - BABY BLOOD

A woman in an abusive relationship becomes the host mother to a creature not of our world.  Or so I think, because it's not quite clear what the thing is, or where it's from.  We only know it starts to grow in the woman's womb, and she has to drink fresh blood in order to keep it alive until its birth.  Worse, she has to kill to get the blood, which keeps her on the run from the police.  Worse still, the fetus talks to the woman.

This is the premise of a movie I didn't have much hope for, but ended up being pretty surprised by how good it is.  BABY BLOOD is a French release from 1990, and I got wind of it after watching a somewhat similiar movie GRACE.  But actually the two movies are quite different.  And even though BABY BLOOD is over 20 years old, the entire film feels very 21st century. 

The gore is over the top.  There is a lot of frontal nudity.  And it is dubbed (quite well, actually).  In the version I got from Netflix, there were additional scenes "re-inserted" that had been missing from the theatrical version.  Those scenes are in the original French with English subtitles.

All in all, it ranks high for me, along with such classics as HIGH TENSION and MARTYRS.
