Monday Movie Review - YELLOWBRICKROAD

In the 1940s, every soul from the tiny town of Friar, New Hampshire walked into the surrounding woods and disappeared. A few hundred were found frozen to death, many were found ruthlessly slaughtered, but the majority vanished without a trace.

Fast forward 70 years. A group of researchers, enamoured of the story, decide to follow the trail, labeled "Yellowbrickroad" by the locals of the re-inhabited town. What they encounter is mysterious, brutal, and frightening.

This movie isn't a gorefest. It's slow, deliberately paced, working up to a conclusion that will leave you speechless. Yes, there is blood. There is torture. There is inexplicable violence. But it comes when you least expect it.

And then there's the music.

This movie reminded me of Blair Witch in the fact that the terror doesn't come with a knife-wielding maniac. It's psychological, and you'll find yourself trying to reason with it long after you've viewed it. That's why my recommendation is that you:

I <3 stories that have you so totally immersed in what's going on that, when you get to the ending, you never saw it coming.

SHADOW begins with an American war vet newly released from his stint in the Iraqui war. His passion is off-road biking (not motor), and on a friend's recommendation, takes off to trails unknown in Europe. There he meets another biker, a beautiful female, and things take a romantic turn until some burly locals decide to have a little fun with them. What none of them expect is for a stranger to come from out of nowhere and kidnap them all, take them to an isolated farmhouse, and begin to experiment on them.

Yes, this is a torture flick, but that's not the horrific part of this movie. And to tell you any more will spoil it for you.

Monday Movie Review - SQUEAL

I found this at Netflix streaming. It's an independent feature (natch!) that has two major things going for it: it's not slick, and it has a few new ideas in it that kept me entertained.

SQUEAL is about a small band heading out of town for a gig, when they run their van off the road in the middle of nowhere. They find a nearby farm, and that's where the horror begins because we already know the "people" who reside there are really the living results of genetic experiments.

The non-glossy feel of this flick allowed me to become more engrossed. The kills aren't original, but they felt more realistic. (If CGI was used, I damn sure couldn't pinpoint it!) The blood looked genuine, and I would swear the actors did their own stunts. The movie takes place in the middle of winter, and I'll take bets the people were actually freezing their bums off.

As jaded as I am after watching countless horror films, I was delightfully surprised at some of the original concepts (midget pig person, anyone?) The ending is downbeat but satisfactory. And there's a neat little scene after the credits roll.

The Mannequin Known as “Pascualita”

In Chihuahua, Mexico, local rumor has it that this mannequin, known as “Pascualita,” is actually an embalmed body. According to legend, a lady named Pascuala Esparza owned a wedding boutique in the city, making dresses for soon-to-be brides. Her own daughter, Pascualita, was engaged to be married, so Pascuala set about to make her a special dress. Everything was planned when, on the day of the wedding, tragedy struck. Supposedly, Pascualita was bitten by a poisonous insect and later died. Distressed by the death of her daughter, Pascuala set out to immortalize her. She embalmed the body, dressed it in her wedding gown, and propped it up in the window of her boutique, for all to see.
Today, Pascualita remains standing in the window of “La Popular” in downtown Chihuahua. Although commonly regarded to as a myth, the details in the mannequin (especially in the hands) keep onlookers wondering.

Monday Movie Review - ATTACK THE BLOCK

Time and time again the independent filmmaker outshines and out-creates anything Hollywood can do. And that's especially true of "Attack the Block". In fact, I promise you're going to end up rooting for the bad guys in this film.

The bad guys are inner city kids. Punks. In the UK. (Yeah, the Brits have their gangs, too.) At the beginning of the film they attack a young woman, who manages to get away sans her purse. While the boys are rejoicing at their haul, they witness a flaming something fall from the sky and land nearby. They go to investigate, and that's where the horror begins. As more of the alien creatures arrive, the gang holes up in an apartment building and try to survive the attack.

The gore and kills are plentiful. The CGI is sparse. And the creatures are incredible, fresh, and unique. My only qualm is that it took a while for my ears to adjust to understanding the accents, but that was a minor detail.

Monday Movie Review - RARE EXPORTS: A Christmas Tale

Starting out as short short films for the internet quickly grew a cult following, and spurred a full-length feature film. And I'm so glad it did! By "holiday rights" I should have reviewed this flick before Christmas, but in truth this movie can be watched at any time of the year.

Many great horror films are coming from other countries not typically thought of as producing horror (see "Troll Hunter" from Norway). "Rare Exports" is from Finland, and this flick will throw every American perception of Santa Claus right out the window.

Basically, it's the story of a drilling company breaking through layers of ice to find a "creature" centuries old. Taking the creature, still encased in ice, to a special facility, the company has no idea it has also unleashed the "elves" destined to protect the creatures. These elves look like our Santa, except they're dirty, they're naked, and they eat raw flesh.

I was completely mesmerized by this movie. Note that it is in Finnish, with English subtitles, but that didn't deter me from thoroughly enjoying it. In fact my whole-hearted recommendation is that you

Bloody Brain Shooters
Channel your inner mad scientist with this Bloody Brain Shooter. Mixing acidic lime juice and Irish cream causes the cream to curdle, creating brain-like strands in the shot.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 oz. strawberry vodka such as Stoli
1/8 oz. Rose’s lime juice
3/4 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
Splash of grenadine

Preparation:

Chill vodka for better smoothness. Add vodka and lime juice to a shaker, shake and strain into a shot glass. Using a straw, dip some Bailey’s Irish Cream into the shot. Once you submerge the straw into the Bailey’s put your finger on top of the straw to hold the Bailey’s in the straw. Dip the straw tip into the vodka and slowly release your top finger. The Bailey’s will curdle a little bit due to the lime juice and you should be able to make strands of Bailey’s.
Repeat the straw/Bailey’s process to build a “brain” in the shot glass. Add a splash of grenadine to the concoction to add the ‘blood’ to the mix. Down the hatch as a shot.

Monday Movie Review - WRONG TURN 4: BLOODY BEGINNINGS

I have to admit I had some trepidations about this one since #3 fizzled for me. Although it's not that bad, #4 has its problems as well.

Again we get some of the same old tropes: a bunch of twenty-somethings, out in the middle of nowhere in the freezing snow and cold, come across an "abandoned" nuthouse during a blizzard. Once more the phones don't work, but the place has all the luxuries of home. What they don't know is the intrepid inbred, cannibalistic threesome from the other three movies have managed to break out of their cells and eat the staff. Now with fresh warm bodies at their disposal, the inbreds have fresh meat for their table.

While I was watching this flick, questions kept popping up in my mind. Like, with the doctors and nurses no longer in charge, wouldn't somebody drive up to the place to find out why no one's answering the phone? What about the delivery people? And the mailman? What about new patients being brought in? If the inmates are running the place, wouldn't somebody on the outside get curious?

This movie is meant to be a prequel for "Wrong Turn" #1. And I admit there are some pretty gruesome moments. The blood is plentiful. There is sex and gore aplenty. A few of the kills are unique. But all the running around and screaming quickly became tedious. Plus there are a couple of TSTL moments that made me roll my eyes. (And you already know going in how this thing has to end.)

But overall this movie had decent acting and a couple of nifty scares, regardless of the serious need for suspension of belief. Which means my recommendation is that you

The horsemanning photo fad derives its name from the Headless Horseman, an evil character from Washington Irving's short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Soon after its discovery, a series of horsemanning photos began trending on sites like Buzzfeed and people got inspired to recreate the original fad. Horsemanning began experiencing a revival in the mid 2011, along with other photo fads such as planking and owling."

Monday Movie Review - CONTAGION

I was all set to see another major kick-ass story about a virus nearly destroying the world's population. I loved "Outbreak" and hoped this one was another edge-of-your-seat nail biter.

Contagion is none of this. But neither is it a bad movie.

It starts on Day 2, where an American woman re-enters the US after a business trip to Japan. She is ill, and everything she touches immediately becomes contaminated. The film continues forward one day at a time, two days, then a week. In the process we see how the virus spreads so rapidly, humanity can't cope. Violence breaks out, and millions upon millions of people die - including the stars. That fact alone blew me away. Six major A-list (and most of them Academy Award winners) in this flick, and some of them die in the movie. Wow.

If you're looking for gore or scary effects, you'll be disappointed. The film is slow, very slow. But the acting is superb. There is a lot of tension and suspense. There's a poignant happy ending. Oh, and all questions are neatly wrapped up in the final five minutes.

But because of its very slow yet methodical pace, my recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - ZOMBIE DIARIES 2: World of the Dead

I haven't seen the first Zombie Diaries, but now I think I need to, just to put a prelude to what I've just watched. But, trust me, you can watch this one without feeling you've missed out on anything.

The story opens up where a couple is secluded in their house without electricity, and by their conversation you know some sort of catastrophe has happened. This movie is shot in cinema verite, meaning a guy is going around with a video camera, and you're seeing what he's shooting in "real time". It gives the viewer a "You Are There" feeling.

We then flip directly to a military establishment that is being decimated by zombies. A few troops manage to escape, and they head for the coast where they hope to catch the last boat out of the UK for Amsterdam, where survivors are gathering to wait out the infestation over the winter. Along the way the troops encounter survivalists who turn out to be more dangerous than the undead.

This film was a pleasant surprise. Plus the ending gave it a nice twist. The gore is plenty, although not as graphic as anything by Romero. But the threat felt real, and the story was entertaining. Which is why my recommendation is

Monday Movie Review - DYLAN DOG

I reeeeealy wanted to like this movie, and in some ways I did. It's very tongue in cheek, and Brandon Routh looks hawt, especially with his shirt off. But for some reason it just fell a bit flat.

Routh plays Dylan Dog, a protector of the dead, including vampires, werewolves, zombies--you know, the usual. But a past personal incident has made him swear off the job, and instead become a normal private investigator tracking unfaithful spouses and such.

Right off the bat his close friend and partner is killed, along with a very prominent man, and immediately Dylan realizes the two deaths are related. Soon afterward, his now undead partner emerges to rejoin him, and the rest of the movie is a visual connect-the-dots taking the viewer from one locale to another, since this all takes place in New Orleans.

To me, the best part of this movie was Marcus, the undead sidekick, played by Sam Huntington. There's a lot of wise-cracking going on. The gore is minimized, which is surprising considering the theme of the movie. The whole thing is played for laughs, even though most of the jokes fall flat.

However, I know that, eye candy-wise, when it comes on one of the movie channels, I'll probably watch it again. Which why my recommendation is that you also

Monday Movie Review - APOLLO 18

My first impression? It's sloooooooooooowww.
My second impression? It's "Paranormal Activity" on the moon.

Three astronauts go to the moon on a secret mission from the Dept. of Defense to plant spy bots on the moon (as opposed to launching the bots into space as satellites.) The two that land to do the grunt work come across some implausible and indistinguishable tracks other than their own, and then realize there is someone...or something...else there with them.

I have to give kudos to the actors who did their best. Having unknown actors (to me) play the parts always help with the buy-in factor. But some of the scary parts just didn't feel scary enough to me. The gore is minimal. The effects were terrific, and for the most part I truly felt like I was watching gathered and edited footage. But for all its hype and anticipation, I wasn't really satisfied once it was over. But in all honesty I can't condemn this film.

Therefore I'm carving a new tombstone for my recommendation.

There's a new show on TV, on the MTV channel, called DEATH VALLEY. The premise is simple: a few years ago zombies, vampires, and werewolves invaded Los Angeles, forcing the police to form the UTF, the Undead Task Force.

It's a comedy. It's a mockumentary. It's COPS vs the paranormal. It's only a half-hour show, and a ton of fun.

I <3 On Demand.

Red State is billed as a horror movie, and in some cases it is. But it's also a very political movie, with a lot of thought-provoking moments.

Michael Parks is the leader of a group (mostly family members) of worshippers who abhor anything that is forbidden by their religion. Parks is phenomenal in this role as the scripture-spouting head of this fundamentalist sect.

The blurb for this flick states that 3 boys from a small town are lured to a trailer on the outskirts. There they are promised 3-on-1 sex with a lusty older woman after they drink the prerequisite 2 beers. What they don't know is that the woman is the daughter of the the leader, and they are going to be made examples of what happens to boys who sin.

The gore is there and very blatant as the boys fight for their lives. And when the town's sheriff is brought into the melee, he calls in government reinforcements, namely John Goodman, who does the best damn acting job of his life, in my humble opinion.

The emphasis of the movie is on the overall mindset of this church and its disciples. The horror is what extremes people will go through to protect or prove their beliefs. And that's why my whole-hearted recommendation is that you

Monday Movie Review - PRIEST

Dystopian. Futuristic. Post-apocalyptic. Western. VAMPIRES.

In the future, the world's populace has gone behind walls, protected by The Church and its Priests who've gained super abilities to fight the vampires that have nearly decimated mankind. But there are still pockets of civilization living in small towns out in the Wasteland. When one Priest discovers that his brother and sister-in-law, who live in one such town, were among some of those civilians ravaged by a new crop of vampires, and that his niece was taken hostage, he leaves the church to save her.

I went into this movie just wanting to be entertained, and I got my money's worth. The vamps in this flick are not the kind we are accustomed to seeing. They reminded me more of the creatures in "The Descent". The revelation of who the bad guy leader was surprised me, but it made sense. I only wish he hadn't gone for the Clint Eastwood imitation.

Think "Blade Runner" meets "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", and throw in some "Starship Troopers", and you have this movie. And because it kept me fully immersed, my recommendation is that you...

Monday Movie Review - THE INHERITANCE

I never saw the trailer. It was the cover and blurb that sold me. And two things struck me immediately about this little feature. First, the "inheritance" deals with a generations-old pact these people's ancestors made as slaves. The young people who gather at a family estate are there thinking they're going to inherit money, when the truth is they've been selected to be sacrificed. There's also ancient African tribal voodoo, and resurrected condemned slaves. That idea alone gave this "six people alone in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter" storyline fresh blood (no pun intended.)

Second, the acting by these relatively unknown actors is top-notch, and the film has a slick, professional feel to it.

Blood and gore is minimized. There are beheadings and dismemberments, but it's all done off-screen. The film is considered more of a thriller than horror. (BTW, the jacket cover is very misleading.)

The cons? I just couldn't get into the movie. Too few exciting moments between long stretches of proselytizing.

I debated whether or not to recommend this movie, but the different slant was enough to tilt the scales. Therefore I suggest with some hesitation that you

Monday Movie Review - SEASON OF THE WITCH

I initially rented this movie not because I'm a Nic Cage fan, but because I'm also a Ron Perlman fan from way back in the days of "Beauty and the Beast". So it wasn't surprising how much I enjoyed this historical piece. It's basically a "buddy" movie, with both Nic and Ron getting equal opportunity to chew the scenery. But there's also a neat story.

In the time of the Crusades, two knights are selected to transport a supposed witch to a special monastery. The monks believe witchcraft is the cause behind the Black Plague, and they hope to coerce the witch into cancelling the spell or whatever it is that has brought about the infection.

The blood is sparse, but the gruesomeness of the disease is very prevalent (along with some fantastic makeup FX.) Cage and Perlman make very convincing knights who may be past their prime age-wise, but who still maintain a commanding presence, as well as superb expertise with the sword.

The ending was my only gripe. It was a bit "meh" for me, but otherwise I can't quibble.

Amanda Storey has been sent to Itsy to convince the town a Ritecost store is just what they need.

I have to admit this was my first time reading erotic horror and after finishing this story I’ll definitely be looking for more and more stories by this author.

This story opens quickly and the author does a great job at offering the ‘something’s creepy’ about Itsy that all good horror stories require. You know something bad will befall Amanda, and you feel more uneasy as the story progresses. By the time she arrives at the bed and breakfast you know she’s not checking out, but what exactly will happen to her? The author made it so entertaining that I wanted to read on. Her demise is the erotic part of this story, and there’s no man involved so it might not be for die hard romance fans. The dialogue is natural sounding, sometimes witty and the characters well drawn.

If, like me, you want to try reading erotic horror, this is a good pick.

Monday Movie Review - THE THAW

Out in the Alaskan tundra, a scientific study uncovers the remains of a wooly mammoth. But as the beast begins to thaw, so do the tiny prehistoric bugs that were hibernating within it. Before too long, the camp is infected, and that's just the first ten minutes of the film.

A group of students from a university are sent to the campsite, including the daughter of one of the scientists. Because he's out of commission, the students have no clue as to why the camp is deserted. It isn't long until the bugs are coming for them.

The only known name in this flick is Val Kilmer, but to me he turned in a wooden performance. However, the supporting cast did an outstanding job. The effects are great, and the makeup is terrific, even if the gore is in short supply. The movie held my interest, but I had to give it another demerit for tacking on a worn out trope ending.

Still, my recommendation, if you need a Saturday afternoon no-brainer, is that you

Monday Movie Review - VANISHING ON 7th STREET

It's an apocalyptic future. Something has shut down all power so that it can attack in the dark. Attack and consume.

Five people find each other after thinking they're the only ones left alive on earth. But the enemy is ruthless, and it's just a matter of time before there'll be no one left.

This film is chock full of known names, and their skillful delivery and acting is why the film worked for me. It's relentless, and you know there's no possible way it can have a happy ending. (Face it. Horror movies aren't known for them.)

There is gore, but it's the overwhelming sense of defeat that keeps you watching. Waiting. Anticipating.

And that means my recommendation is

Monday Movie Review - THE CHILDREN

If you're thinking this flick is anything like "The Bad Seed" or "Village of the Damned", you're not too far off. But this film feels more realistic. The spontaneous reactions by the children don't seem overly dramatic, or give you the impression they're being manipulated by some invisible force. And for that reason alone I found myself drawn into the story.

The Children in question are brothers, sisters, and cousins. Their mothers are sisters. Younger sister's family has gone to older sister's family's home for the New Year's holiday, and for a while everything that happens is what every family get-together experiences. Soon the children begin to feel illness, throwing up and not wanting to eat. After that, the "accidents" begin to occur. You never find out what caused the children's behavior to change, and I like that. It keeps you guessing and wondering if the infection is going to spread, and with whom.

There is a moderate amount of gore, but this film is more relentless when it comes to the psychological drama. Which is why my recommendation is that you

I was flipping through my cable guide and found this channel. Right now it shows reruns of "Monsters", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Twilight Zone", "Tales From the Darkside", and "Outer Limits", as well as horror movies. They have a website and a blog, and I've noticed they'll be highlighting the Masters of Horror series in July.
